Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 VHD (i.e. Virtual Machine) now available for download!

Since posting the blog entry a couple of weeks ago about the MOSS 2007 Technical Resources DVD that was distributed to every TechEd Orlando attendee, numerous people have asked about how they can get a copy of it. While I'm still working out the details (the VM corruption problem has caused a delay in my original plan to make the DVD broadly available by June 15th), there is now an alternative way for you to download the VM portion of the DVD.

Here's the blurb from the download page:

This download enables you evaluate Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007. Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 is an integrated suite of server capabilities that can help improve organizational effectiveness by providing comprehensive content management and enterprise search, accelerating shared business processes, and facilitating information-sharing across boundaries for better business insight. Office SharePoint Server 2007 supports all intranet, extranet, and Web applications across an enterprise within one integrated platform, instead of relying on separate fragmented systems. Additionally, this collaboration and content management server provides IT professionals and developers with the platform and tools they need for server administration, application extensibility, and interoperability.

This fully functional pre-configured VHD provides you a trial software will automatically expire after 30 days. This is a preconfigured virtual machine contained within the Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) format. Virtual Server 2005 R2 is required to run this VHD.

The virtual machine includes a copy of the MOSS 2007 Product Evaluation Guide (right on the Windows Desktop) and is configured so that the functional walkthrough at the end of the Eval Guide works hand-in-hand with it. That's just brilliant! :-) Much thanks to Woody Windischman (a SharePoint MVP) and my colleague, Richard Riley, for making this useful resource available!

Now, go get the VHD from here!

[Update 10/17/2007 -- The following are normal characteristics of the demo VM:

  • After boot and login, you get a dialog with the license terms, and the Server Manager screen.
  • A few minutes later, you get two balloon messages: 1 about running Windows update, and 1 about the 30 day expiration.
  • Unless you give the VM access to the Internet, ignore the Windows Update balloon.
  • Unless you have an MSDN or TechNet key for Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition R2, ignore the activation balloon. No other license key, not even Select or Enterprise keys, will activate the VM.
  • The activation balloon will count down until 30 days have passed, at which point you will either need to start over with a clean (never booted) copy of the VM, or activate it with the MSDN/TechNet key. No other methods of extending the life of the VM are supported.
  • Using one of the above keys will activate the VM through October 2008.
  • After October 2008 the VM will become inoperative in all cases - activated or not.

Are they sleeping. We would like to see the possibilities of sharepoint, but this does not give a confident feeling about the service

# re: MOSS VHD Windows activation ?

I downloaded MOSS VHD and let it run in the virtual server.

My problem: Windows Server 2003 in the VHD requires a product activation.

I tried product activation by phone here in Germany, but Microsoft is not accepting the Installation ID. Microsoft wants a change of product key.

But because I downloaded MOSS VHD I don't have such a product key. Where can I get such a product key number ?

Has somebody successfully activated Windows 2003 within MOSS VHD ?

I have the same issue with the eval vhd for exchange 2k7. Our company is about to drop half a million bucks on this and we can't even get a test image up to show proof of concept. Don't bother calling 7-11 for activation. They'll sell you a hotdog or slurpie but heaven help us if they ever actually help you activate your product.

If I were the one paying the bills for this gaggle I'd have started asking for a solution that has actual support rather than vaporsupport from some 3rd world country.

I posted something earlier, I have re-downloaded (from different internet connections, in case it was a caching issue) the part 3 of this download but I get the problem mentioned above (still).

Any pointers?

Thanks,

Charlie

The password does work...  well of sorts anyway.....  bearing in mind this is a US download and piece of software, the @ key on a US keyboard is shift+2 which is where the @ key is.  It worked for me anyway :-)

Hi, I have Lenovo laptop T42 (2Ghz, 2GB RAM), can I install Windows Virtualization Server 2005 on it and then install MOSS 2007 VHD on it? I just want to run MOSS for testing and Proof Of Concept. With this env. will I be able to customize sharepoint? Will I be able to consume web services in other application say query Content from Siebel?

Thanks,

# re: Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 VHD (i.e. Virtual Machine) now available for download!

Hi. I downloaded the MOSS VHD; it runs on the MS virtual server, but the Win2K3 needs a product activation key. I am located in Berlin, Germany; clicking on activation through the internet bombs back on me with an "Unauthorized product key" error message, asking me for a key. The option "remind me later" then logs me off, the option "telephone" does not recognize the Installation ID. How do I activate Win2K3? Thanks.

# re: Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 VHD (i.e. Virtual Machine) now available for download!

Hi,

I downloaded the VHD a few weeks ago - it took ages...

After all that they did not work...I got the CRC error that so many others have done...

WTF is Msoft up to? Why oh why do things like this happen all the time with MS?

There were posts about this problem saying it was fixed in July 2007 - well i was trying this in June 2008...er...hello?

PLEASE DO NOT TEMPT US DEVELOPERS WITH JUICY LOOKING DOWNLOADS THAT DO NOT WORK....

IT IS FAR WORSE FOR THEM TO BE THERE AND NOT WORK THAN NOT THERE AT ALL...

IT IS A PURE WASTE OF TIME AND EFFORT...

PLEASE TEST YOUR DOWNLOADS...

YOURS VERY GRUMPILY AND TRYING REALLY HARD NOT TO SWEAR OR RANT BUT SETTLING FOR CAPS LOCK INSTEAD :)

I got a  TechNet key for Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition R2 - 180 day trial and it is not accepted in the VHD. I could not see a way to regiester for any other Windows Server 2003 key thru technet and my VHD expired with 10 days.

# re: Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 VHD (i.e. Virtual Machine) now available for download!

What "Product Key" is needed to extend the WIN03_MOSS VM ???  I generated MSDN subscription keys for the OS and they are not in the ######-######-######-######-######-######-###### format that the activation form will accept.  How do I find the key to extend the demo past the 10 days, ... until Oct. 30, 2008 ?????
